Lemongrass Hydrosol
Lemongrass hydrosol, Cymbopogon flexuosus is the variety used, also known as lemongrass floral water, is the aromatic water that remains after steam-distilling lemongrass. It carries a refreshing, lemony scent similar to lemongrass essential oil but is much milder, making it suitable for various applications. Here are some of its uses and benefits:
Aromatherapy: Lemongrass hydrosol has a calming and uplifting scent, making it an excellent choice for aromatherapy. It can help alleviate stress, anxiety, and fatigue when used as a spritz. Spray into the palms of your hands and inhale deep and slow.
Skin Toner: Lemongrass hydrosol has mild astringent properties, making it an ideal natural toner for oily or acne-prone skin. It helps to tighten pores, balance oil production, and promote clearer skin.
Facial Mist: Its refreshing and revitalizing properties make lemongrass hydrosol an excellent facial mist. It can be spritzed onto the face throughout the day to hydrate, refresh, and energize the skin, giving it a healthy glow.
Insect Repellent: Lemongrass is known for its insect-repellent properties, and its hydrosol can be used in homemade bug sprays or applied directly to the skin to help repel mosquitoes and other insects.
Hair care: When used as a hair rinse or added to homemade hair care products, lemongrass hydrosol can help promote shiny, healthy-looking hair. It may also help to control excess oil on the scalp.
Cooking: While not as commonly used as lemongrass essential oil or fresh lemongrass in cooking, lemongrass hydrosol can be added to culinary recipes for a subtle citrus flavor. It can be used in beverages, desserts, dressings, and marinades.
Room Spray: Lemongrass hydrosol can be used as a natural air freshener or room spray to eliminate odors and create a fresh, uplifting atmosphere in any space.
Cleaning: Its antimicrobial properties make lemongrass hydrosol a useful ingredient in homemade cleaning solutions. It can be added to surface sprays or mopping solutions to help disinfect and deodorize surfaces around the home.
Relieves Headaches: The soothing aroma of lemongrass hydrosol may help alleviate headaches or migraines when used as a compress or inhaled.
Digestive Aid: Lemongrass hydrosol is believed to have digestive benefits. It can be consumed in small amounts diluted in water to help alleviate digestive discomfort or as a refreshing beverage after meals.
When using lemongrass hydrosol, it's essential to ensure that you are purchasing it from a reputable source. As with any natural product, it's recommended to perform a patch test before using it extensively, especially if you have sensitive skin or allergies.
Floral Waters can be used as an all over body spray, as a facial spritz, hair rinse, bug repellant and deodorant. Hydrosols can be added to your favorite DIY lotion recipes, in face masks mixed with clay, poultices and compresses for itchy skin from bug bites or eczema, acne and rashes… the uses are endless. Whatever you use water for in body and skin care products you can replace using the appropriate hydrosol for the effect you are looking for. Think Essential Oils without most of the caveats. Hydrosols can be used diluted or straight, mixed with other hydrosols or used alone.
All Hydrosols are distilled by me here on the farm in my copper Alembic Still.
Use liberally and often, the benefits are amazing!
